How wide is the wheelchair ramp with handrails?

The wheelchair ramp with handrails is available in two widths, 720mm wide (useable width 690mm wide) or 933mm wide (useable width 888mm wide).

The average width of a wheelchair is 584mm, on average scooters are 610mm wide. We recommend checking the width of your mobility scooter, wheelchair or walker prior to purchase and the width of your doorway. 

Can I rent a wheelchair ramp with handrails?

At The Ramp People we do not offer rental of any access raps. All of our ramps are provided with a 1 year warranty, this can only be provided on new ramps as we can ensure they are provided to you in perfect condition.

Is the ramp with rails portable?

Our wheelchair ramp with handrails can be used as a temporary, portable access solution which can simply be rested on step or kerb when required. The ramp is provided with fixing points meaning it can also be fixed in place and left in place when preferred. The ramp can be used indoors or outdoors. 

How long does a wheelchair ramp need to be and what is the maximum slope of a ramp?

We recommend a minimum of a 1:6 gradient for assisted manual wheelchairs, 1:8 gradient for electric wheelchairs and scooters. A 1:12 gradient is recommended for modular ramp systems. Use our ramp calculator to assist with this.

Can the ramp be used with just one handrail? 

Yes these kits can be used with double handrails, one handrail or no handrails depending on your preference. Please note we do not sell single handrails but you can simply just assemble one handrail to the ramp if you prefer. 

How difficult is it to assemble the kit? 

The longer ramp lengths are quite long and heavy so we would recommend for at least two people to put the ramp in place. A kit is provided to assemble the handrails onto the ramp. We expect the majority can assemble the kit in under 30 minutes, depending on abilities. 

What other wheelchair ramp with handrails are available? 

In addition to our wheelchair ramp with with handrails, we offer our RollAble wheelchair ramp which is available with or without handrails. The RollAble ramp is available in 3 widths and can be provided in any length from 3ft upwards.  

We also offer a range of modular wheelchair ramp systems which are designed to be left in place. These kits can be provided with various platforms and steps and are provided in various widths such as 900mm wide, 1100mm wide and 1500mm wide. The kits are modular and built to order so we ask you to provide details of your requirements to allow our team to recommend the most suitable ramp for your needs. 

Are the wheelchair ramps compliant with regulations? 

These ramps with rails are designed as temporary ramps, currently, there is no legal regulations surrounding temporary wheelchair ramps. The ramps do however provide disabled access to properties and therefore can assist with buildings meeting their obligations to comply to the Equality Act by providing reasonable adjustments to those with disabilities. 

Can these ramps be used in a professional setting?

Yes, these ramps are suitable to be used in a domestic and professional setting including to provide access to businesses, shops, events, offices and more. 

Do wheelchair ramps need handrails? 

It is not essential for wheelchair ramps to have handrails however for health and safety we do recommended it where possible. In addition, if those using the ramp are using rollators, walkers or require support walking we do recommend purchasing an access ramp with handrails to provide additional support to users.

Are the wheelchair ramp kits safe? 

Our wheelchair ramps with handrails are safe to use aslong as they are used within the recommended capacity of 350kg and do not exceed the recommended load height. Please note the ramps are designed as a mobility aid and are only designed for disabled access, they are not recommended for loading goods or machinery. 

Are the wheelchair ramps suitable for manual and electric wheelchairs? 

Yes, these ramps for wheelchairs are suitable for manual wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs, mobility scooters, walkers and pedestrians. We do recommend using the handrails where possible for safety, especially when the ramp is used by those with walkers or rollators. Please do check the ramp width is suitable for your requirements. 

I am unsure what ramp would work for my doorway, do you provide site visits? 

We are an online business so we do not provide site visits however you can email over pictures of the area and measurements and our team will be able to provide recommendations. You can also send the details to us via our chat function or WhatsApp. We do also offer a 60-day return period (with the exception of built-to-order items) if the ramp is not suitable you can return it to us. Please note the 10ft ramp and 12ft ramp is difficult to return due to the size so we would recommend checking suitability prior to purchase. 

Do I qualify for VAT exemption? 

Many mobility aids, including wheelchair accessible ramps can be purchased VAT exempt if you have a long term disabilty. Simply enter your full name (or the name of the person the ramp is for) and disability in the VAT exemption box which appears when you add the item to your basket on our website. If you are a charity, simply enter the charity name and number.
